“Man up and deal with it” is not the answer.

We’re busy men and from time to time pressure from work or at home can amount to more than we can handle. The invisible bodily debilitation gremlin that is stress should be dealt with in a multitude of ways that range from the physical to the psychological. It’s suggested that stress puts the body in mild survival mode – a shorthand version of a “oh god this lion is going to eat me” hormonal response – that can run a body into the ground if left unchecked. In simpler terms, stress is the inability to adapt to a changing environment.  Everybody is exposed to anxieties and unease, but it all just seems to slide off for some. How do they do it?

Your body is a machine so take care of it

As a rule, a healthy body is a happy body. Fitness can strip away aches, pains, and lethargy, preventing them from compounding the effects of stressors. Proper diet and hydration will be reflected in the feeling of your own skin. Believe me, go for a run when you’re stressed out and you will feel the difference.

Sleep is also important. Poor sleep patterns can lead to malaise and irritability. Put forth the effort to keep your vessel in ship shape and your mood will be all the better for it. Make sure you’re getting 6-8 hours of sleep every night.

Change the way you see things

Most importantly, you need to adjust your perception of events. Don’t be tempted to discount the power of positive thinking as new-age mumbo jumbo or silliness. The way you subjectively receive things is, to simply rephrase, how they affect you.

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” – Reinhold Neibur

So somebody left a coffee ring on your desk: is this an emblem of the gross inconsideration and stupidity of mankind or an inconsequential mistake? If you’ve ever wondered how that certain somebody can be so blithe all the time, it’s not because he’s oblivious. The difference between the world being out to get you and things being generally groovy depends on your attitude.

Life makes us all victims of stress. The key to perfecting stress management is to learn its rhythms and adapting, distancing yourself from the niggling. Don’t forget to take a break from time to time and check out, so to speak, if you need to. You need to remember as well to become thirsty for challenges! Life is not supposed to be easy and true successful people seek out experiences that challenge them and force them to get to the next level.
