2017 was an interesting year in music. Even though it seemed we lost more than we gained with the losses of Chester Bennington, Tom Petty, Chris Cornell, Charles Bradley, Fats Domino, among others. All these musicians left a legacy that is undeniable and one that the current crop of talent will surely be influenced by. Kendrick Lamar continued to dominate both critically and commercially with DAMN. SZA, along with other R&B stars such as Sampha, Majid Jordan, and Syd, made sure that R&B had one of it’s best years in a while. Trap went even more mainstream with Cardi B’s meteoric rise and you couldn’t go to a club or bar without hearing a song by rapper whose moniker started with “Lil”. New talent sparked across all genres with Khalid killing it in pop, BROCKHAMPTON dropping a trilogy of great hip hop albums, and artists such as White Reaper and Greta Van Fleet doing their best to bring back guitar driven rock.
